About Murter

ISLAND MURTER

The island of Murter is one of the islands of the North Dalmatian archipelago, the densest archipelago of the Adriatic and the Mediterranean, which includes almost 40 percent of all Croatian islands. Thanks to the centuries-old care of Murter for its overseas possessions, Murter became the center of a “galaxy” of as many as 189 islands, islets and reefs.

It is located in the northwestern part of the Šibenik archipelago and Šibenik-Knin County. The island of Murter is only 6 meters away from the mainland, so that distance is bridged by a drawbridge, which makes the island accessible and gives it extra charm.

There are four settlements on the Island of Murter, of which Murter and Jezera are older, and Tisno and Betina are younger. Most of the island is covered with centuries-old olive and fig trees, which are the main traditional crops grown by the local population.

From the moment of settling until today, the inhabitants of Murter have gone from farmers and stockbreeders, fishermen, winegrowers to caterers, skippers, tourist workers. The Kornati islands are being discovered as one of the most beautiful ecologically preserved landscapes.

The island of Murter is known for its beautiful sandy and pebble beaches. And in addition to the famous – Slanica, Kosirina, Čigrađa, Podvršak, Lovišća, etc., there are a large number of small coves, hidden from view and away from the hustle and bustle of larger beaches.
